Famotidine
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcer; active benign gastric ulcer; GERD. Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer patients at reduced dosage after healing of an active ulcer. Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Active duodenal & active benign gastric ulcer 40 mg daily at bedtime for 4-8 wk. Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer 20 mg once daily at bedtime. GERD Initially 20-40 mg bd for 6-12 wk. Pathological hypersecretory conditions Initially 20 mg every 6 hr. Severe Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome Up to 160 mg every 6 hr.
Special Precautions
Moderate or severe renal impairment. Pregnancy. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, cholestatic jaundice, liver enzyme abnormalities, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, dry mouth; leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia; palpitation; musculoskeletal pain, arthralgia; grand mal seizure, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, depression, anxiety, decreased libido, paresthesia, insomnia, somnolence; bronchospasm; alopecia, pruritus, dry skin, flushing; dizziness, fever, asthenia, fatigue & headache.
Drug Interactions
Decreased bioavailability w/ antacid. Inhibited renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid.
